There’s nothing like a little exercise to shake out the jet lag and energize you for a day of exploring Philadelphia—and if you’re looking for an opportunity to move, this city’s got you covered. Whether you want to use your ClassPass, drop in at a new gym for a day, meet local friends, or enjoy an outdoor workout, here are five ways to make it happen.
1. Make a New Friend
Exercise and socialize with the Fishtown Beer Runners. Every Thursday, the group runs three to five miles before sitting down for a drink at a different pub every week. It’s a great way to see part of the city, try a local hot spot, and connect with fellow runners.
There are three starting locations: Palmer Park, City Hall courtyard, and Bainbridge and 7th. Be there and ready to run at 7:00 pm.
2. Get a Serious Workout
Your hotel fitness center is available for your convenience. Clean and well-equipped, it’s the ideal place to complete your workout before you enjoy your day in Philadelphia.
If you’re looking for a class instead, you have a lot of options. For yoga, visit Three Queens Yoga on Monroe Street. A single drop-in is $25, or you could attend the $10 community classes offered once a week. Indoor cyclists will want to get on a bike at Revel Ride. This Philadelphia-born studio features three types of classes for those who love choreography, those who love hard work and the stats to prove it, and those who want a little of both.
3. Try Something New
If you want to fly high, aerial yoga (and other circus arts classes) at Kaya Aerial Yoga is the way to go. For those who looking to elevate their workouts, a $16 day pass will give you access to Doylestown Rock Gym. The day passes are for experienced climbers who are comfortable jumping in on their own; for some instruction, the $21 one-hour introductory package will help you get started.
4. Spend Time Outside
Philadelphia boasts its share of popular green spaces for a walk, jog, or bike ride, including Fairmont Park and Washington Square Park—which has the added bonus of being steeped in history, making it a worthwhile stop whether you intend to work out or not.
For a bigger outdoor adventure, Schuylkill River Trail features miles of paths, including a more than 30-mile stretch from Philadelphia to Parkerford.
5. I’ll Just Watch, Thanks
Franklin Field, the iconic University of Pennsylvania stadium, is a great place to catch a football or lacrosse game, depending on the time of year. If you visit in April, you’ll want a ticket for The Penn Relays, which is celebrating its 125th year in 2019. This three-day track and field event features some of the best athletes of all ages. Of course, you can always join the hometown crowd for a Phillies or Eagles game.
